Annual Report 2014-2015

O ne more year has been added to the glorious saga of Aurora's Engineering College | Tilak Road, Abids, Hyderabad. In a span of 17 years, the college has carved a niche for itself among the cluster of educational institutions and will continue to spread its wings far and wide. As our journey continues, we take on new challenges, new solutions and new heights.

This report presents to you all the happenings that have taken place in Aurora's Engineering College | Tilak Road, Abids, Hyderabad for the academic year 2014-15.

New Courses and Admissions

You will be happy to know that, this year one new course has been added at the under graduation level i.e.; Agriculture Engineering, apart from the existing 6 UG programs and 13 PG programs in engineering stream, along with MBA program. Around 375 students have joined the college in various programmes during this academic year.

Results

Academics is the soul of our college and results of passed out students shows that CE department topped the college with a pass percentage of 98.3 followed by IT, MECH, ECE, EEE, and CSE, with an overall pass percentage of 85%.

The results of the 2013-14, 2nd semester & 2014-15 1st semesters were declared during this academic year and showed that the students are performing well & achieving good percentages. The highest pass percentage in second year II Semester of 2012-13 was 60% from department of CSE followed by CE, ECE, EEE, MECH, and IT. In third year II semester, MECH engineering stood first with 65% followed by, IT, EEE, ECE, CE, and CSE. The highest pass percentage in 2nd year I Semester of 2014-15, was from the department of ECE followed by MECH, CSE, CE and EEE. In 3rd year I Semester, CE stood first followed by CSE, ECE, ME, and EEE. In fourth year I Semester, EEE topped with 70%, followed by CSE, ME, CE, IT, and ECE.

Placements

The placement activity has been very encouraging this year with many companies visiting our campus and many students getting placed due to continuous efforts from our central placement cell along with the training and placements cell of the college. We are proud to announce that 15 companies visited our campus resulting in the placement of 140 students till now in various reputed companies like IBM, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Amazon, GenPact, Sutherland, APPS Associates, etc.

Initiatives

The college has taken several new initiatives in this academic year. To cater to the academic, professional, co-curricular and extra-curricular needs of the diverse student population and streamline the varied academic and administrative operations that take place regularly on campus, the college needs various support systems. The Principal's Handbook, which was published and received copyrightsunder the guidance of our Secretary, Dr. Ramesh B Nimmatoori, has highlighted the need to offer a comprehensive array of support services that will help ensure success of the college. Aurora always stays ahead in innovation and implementation of new ideas to meet the expectations of the staff and students and, keeping this in view, the college has reconstituted and newly established several 'Committees, Cells, Centres and Clubs'. 26 committees, 13 cells, 4 centres and 5 clubs apart from the student chapters and professional clubs were relentlessly putting their efforts in order to keep abreast the faculty, improve the staff's performance and polish the skills of the students. The objective of these support systems is to assist the staff in imparting holistic education, to promote higher student achievement.

A campus Wi-Fi with a bandwidth of 20Mbps was launched enabling students and staff to access seamless internet while on campus which has helped reduce the paper work to a great extent as sharing of information of all sorts is being done through mails.

We are proud to intimate that our final year B Tech CSE students have developed and launched an Android based Aurora Mobile App that enables every user, student, parent, or staff, to be connected with us at all times. The windows version of the app is also made ready and is ready for launch.

Our Quality Improvement Cell, we have applied for the renewal of National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and are also in the process of applying for NAAC. We have applied for various proposals under AICTE Schemes in the academic year 2013-14, out of which we are very much delighted to get a sanction of Rupees10.5 Lakhs for a Research Promotion Scheme, submitted by Dr. U.M. Choudhary, our Dean of Academics, as a Principal Investigator. The Cell is also monitoring the effectiveness and functioning of all the support systems regularly through a quality improvement workshop.

The college has taken the initiative to release a monthly newsletter 'Aurora Sandesh' from the month of November 2014 and is being released every month which is a reflection of the vibrant activity in the campus.

We have given utmost importance to experiential learning and have motivated our students to take up internships with the industries to get hands-on experience. For the first time, more than hundred students from B Tech final year have taken up internships this year with reputed industries that include BHEL, ECIL, Vizag Steel Plant, South Central Railways, Hyundai, NIC, CDAC, L&T Metro Rail Project, etc.

Many of our final year students have taken up innovative projects and we appreciate their efforts in doing it as an in-house project under the able guidance of the faculty with whom they are associated with during their four years of technical course.

The training and placements cell of the college has taken the initiative to impart company specific training to students ahead of each placement drive by tying up with the external agencies due to which a good number of students were placed in each drive. Several mock tests and interviews were also conducted as part of the initiative.

Identifying that communication is an integral part of every course, which is vital in the career of an individual; we have initiated 'Literary Club' for the skill development of the students and organised various programs under the club.

We are happy to say that new labs were added to Civil Engineering Department like Concrete and Highway Material Lab and Environmental Engineering Lab. We have strengthened our infrastructure, not only by adding labs, but also in constructing a new floor.

Several online examinations in collaboration with TCS were conducted in our college like GATE, IBPS, VRO/VRA, etc.

We have reached MoU's with Oracle for Workforce Development Program for training and project guidance and certification from Oracle professionals, with Roboversity, SkyFi Labs Bangalore for training students and project guidance in Robotics, and with International Technological University, San Jose, California for higher education opportunities, and student and staff exchange programmes.

We have been conducting several lectures as part of E-learning through ELSDM & NPTEL and 15 such sessions were conducted in this academic year.

Events and Activities

Several workshops, seminars, and training programmes were organised by the college under all its departments. Many invited talks by eminent personalities from various fields were also organised in order to enhance the skill set of the students, as well as give them exposure to industry etiquette.

Computer Science and Engineering

The department of Computer Science and Engineering and Information Technology has organised a two day Workshop on Firewall Security in association with CSI and Firewall Security Solutions, and a two day workshop on CISCO Networking as part of India's Biggest Networking Championship. The department held HD live lectures on Awareness in Computer Architecture and Object Oriented Thinking. The department has also conducted and training programmes on J2SE, MySQL and PHP, and Advanced Java in association with Oracle as part of their Workforce Development Programme. A one day Computer Awareness Programme was organised for high school students from local schools in association with the Extension Activities Cell. Apart from the above the CSI student branch has conducted various technical competitions for the students of all disciplines.

Electronics and Communication Engineering

The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering has organised a National Level Technical Fest, Elecstacy, on 30th October 2014 in which 778 students have participated and competed in various events. A faculty development programme on Probability Theory and Stochastic Processes, an adjunct course on Embedded Systems, a one day workshop on Web Design and Development, one week training programme on Digital Design through Verilog HDL in association with Lucid VLSI, and a two day workshop on Embedded System Design were also organised. Several guest lectures were also conducted by the department. A short term training programme in MATLAB for Image and Signal Processing Applications was organised on 11th and 12th of March 2015. A seminar on Women in Engineering was organised on 5th March 2015. A two day national level workshop on Quadcopter on 19th and 20th of March in which a huge number of students have participated and developed and tested 18 quadcopters in two days. An industrial tour was organisedto Doordarshan Kendra, Ramanthapur.

Mechanical Engineering

The department of Mechanical Engineering has organised a national level technical fest, Droidz, on 15th and 16th of October 2014. The department has organised several workshops and training programmes including a two day workshop on AutoCAD, a one day workshop on Development and Application of Renewable Energy Resources under SAE collegiate club, a two day workshop on Design and Vehicle Dynamics in association with Atelier Motors, a one month training programme on ANSYS Software Design Tool, and a seminar on CATIA V5 Design Tool. Apart from these programmes, the department has also organised several guest lectures on topics such as Modelling using AutoCAD and CNC Machines, CFD, etc. An industrial visit to CITD, Balanagar, was organised on 20th September 2014. The SAE club of the department has been conducting several competitions such as technical quiz, mind games, etc. throughout the year.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering

The department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering has organised a two day workshop on Electrical Wiring and Safety for 10th, Intermediate, and Diploma students on 8th and 9th May 2014 in association with APCPDCL, a training programme on MATLAB in Electrical Applications, a seminar on Automation in Power Systems, a guest lecture on AUTOCAD, and another Guest Lecture by S.R.K.Raju, Chief Manager Power Grid, Hyderabad which has thrown light at several alternative ways in resolving the present power crisis. The department has also conducted an industrial visit to Power Grid, Ghatkesar on 16th September 2014, and another visit to CPRI, Hyderabad on 10th March 2015 for the students of III and IV year EEE.

Civil Engineering

The department of Civil Engineering has organised a two day workshop on STAAD PRO in the month odf September 2014, and a one day workshop on Project Oriented Applications of AUTOCAD in February 2015.

Humanities and Science

The department of Humanities and Sciences has organised a Communication Skills Development Programme on 27th June 2014 for faculty and staff of the college, along with a guest lecture on Elements of Statistical Mechanics and Dielectric Properties, a one day skill development programme on Adobe Photoshop, a one day skill development program on Enhancing Skills in Grammar for B Tech first year students, a guest lecture on Applications of Engineering Mathematics, and a guest lecture on Computational Mathematics on 1st April 2015.

College Level Events

Our professional societies, CSI Student Chapter and SAE Student Chapter were conducting various programs regularly. True to the dictum of 'Learning Beyond Classroom', our IEEE Student Chapter has conducted more than 15 events in this academic year.

The college with the help of its various support systems has organised many events and activities where in a large number of students and staff have participated and made them a grand success.

Besides academics, our students have also been very active in the field of Co-Curricular & Extra Curricular activities, and it gives us immense satisfaction that the sports meet, Khel was organized for private engineering colleges of Telangana State and around 800 students participated very enthusiastically with full vigor and energy, maintaining the sporting spirit throughout. Events like cricket, kho, kabaddi, volley ball, throw ball, badminton, and athletics were conducted. The response was immense for various events. The winners of Cricket andVolley Ball are �Vignan Bharathi Institute of Technology', Aushapur and runners of Cricket are 'Aurora's Scientific and Technological Research Academy', Bandlaguda. Runners of Volley ball are 'Holy Mary Institute of Technology and Science', Keesara. The winners of Kabaddi are 'Aurora's Engineering College | Tilak Road, Abids, Hyderabad', Bhongir and runners are 'Teegala Krishna Reddy Engineering College'. I congratulate all the winners.

A national level cultural fest, Pallavi was organised on 31st October 2014 where around 540 students participated from across the country and exhibited their skills in singing, dancing, photography, etc. Aavirbhaav, Induction day, welcoming the first year students of all disciplines, was organised on 15th September 2014. Swagama, Freshers day, was celebrated on 13th February 2015. 'Sampradaya' the Traditional Day was held on 27th March 2015 and the college wore a festive look with all the staff, faculty and students dressed in traditional attires.

A national level project expo, Samshodhana, was organised for the first time by the college yesterday where students from various colleges have exhibited their projects which has inspired and motivated the visitors both staff and students alike. One project exhibited under each department will be selected for a best project award and will be presented with awards today.

The college has taken the initiative to celebrate all the important national and international days with the help of its Festivities Committee to make the students aware of the day's importance and help them understand the social and human values. The college like every year celebrated Independence day, and Engineers day. Teacher's day was celebrated as a self governing day where students have played the roles of Principal, HODs, and faculty members for half a day followed by celebrations as a token of affection towards their teachers.

The festivities committee has also organised National Science Day Celebrations in association with H&S department, Chatrapathi Shivaji Jayanthi Celebrations, International Mother Language Day, World Health Day, etc. The committee has organised the celebrations of all the festivals including Vinayaka Chavithi, Bathukamma, Holi in association with Cultural Club, Ugadi, and Sriram Navami on the campus.

The Women Empowerment Cell has organised International Women's Day Celebrations on 10th March 2015 and a workshop on Kavach, self defence for women, in association with Internal Complaints Committee on 30th March 2015 in which students were trained in martial arts for self defence by a martial arts expert. A guest lecture on "Bliss of Health" highlighting the health issues for women was also organised by the cell.

Our Cultural club has organised a talent hunt in association with Red FM and MAX.

Our Nature club has organised a Snake Expo and Awareness Programme in association with Friends of Snake Society.

Alumni Committee has organised a Workshop on Future Opportunities for Engineering Graduates in which one alumni member from each department working with reputed organisations have attended as resource persons and shared their experiences and views on future aspects, with final year students.

Admissions Committee has organised Engineering Awareness Programmes for intermediate students of three colleges in Bhongir and Janagaon to make wise choice while opting for a branch of engineering.

Last but not the least, our Extension Activities Cell which embodies NSS has been the most active cell on campus doing a commendable job in organizing various events, not only in our college & neighboring villages, but also in contributing their might in preserving our environment. The cell has organised nearly 50 activities in this academic year. Our NSS Volunteers are active members in the "Clean Hussain Sagar Campaign". The cell has also been actively involved in organizing various events on days of national prominence such as National Education Day, Earth Day, etc. The cell regularly organizes Blood donation camps, health camps, protection of lakes, distribution of Eco friendly Ganesha's and several awareness programs. We are proud to state that Mr.Uma Shankar, student of B Tech IV year CSE has got the Best NSS VolunteerAward from Govt. of Telangana and also from JNTUH University. Three other students have bagged awards in different competitions. TheCell in association with Nature Club has organised Cyclothon, a cycle rally, on 24th March 2015 to provide public awareness on environmental pollution and its effects and use of cycles for commute to reduce carbon footprint.The Cell has organised a 3D-contest on 18th March 2015 on the theme "Protecting Environment from Pollution". A free Swine Flu Medicine distribution camp in Bhongir town was held. Several Swachh Bharath programmes were conducted by the cell and very recently two hundred students of B Tech first year of Aurora's Engineering College | Tilak Road, Abids, Hyderabad have participated in a Swachh Bharath programme organised by Eenadu and ETV at Raigiri. Through the cell, the college has identified 20 villages for a village adoption programme in order to develop the villages by providing voluntary service for which 650 students have registered and will be launched soon.

Faculty Achievements

Several papers were published by our faculty in reputed national & international journals. We are proud of the rich research atmosphere which prevails in our faculty members whose constant endeavour has given us around 30 publications in national and international journals and conferences.

Around 25 faculty are pursuing their PhD's from reputed universities. Several of them have cleared their Pre Ph.D exam.

Mr. C. Balarengadurai from CSE department has completed his Ph.D.

Mr. M.A. Jabbar, Associate Professor, CSE department has submitted his Thesis and was elected as IEEE Computer Society India Council Executive Committee Member. It is a great honour for which we all congratulate him.

Mr. B Laxmana Swamy, Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering department has completed his Colloquium successfully as part of his Ph.D work at JNTUH.

Prof. S Rengarajan, EEE department has received a Best Paper Award from CPRI for his research paper.

32 faculty members from all departments were sponsored for various training programmes organised by other colleges and industries in the country.

We are very proud andhonoured to work under the aegis of this management which always encourages the faculty to strive in pursuit of excellence.

Student Achievements

We appreciate and congratulate all the students who brought laurels to the organisation by exhibiting their talents in various technical events conducted at national& international levels and have also been publishing papers.

Fifteen students from B Tech III year Mechanical Engineering department have secured 6th place in a national level Eco Kart 2015 organised by Gautam Buddha University at Greater Noida.

8 students of EEE had participated in Technical Fest at NIT Warangal and won 1stand 3rd Prizes in paper presentation.

4 students from B Tech final year CSE have participated in a competition organised by Deloitte and won third place and a cash prize of twelve thousand rupees.

16 students of CSE had participated in development contest at BITS-PILANI Hyderabad and won 2nd and 3rd prizes.

4 students of MECH had participated in SAE India and presented a research paper in Ahmedabad.

11 students of EEE are working on HYBRID SOLAR ELECTRICAL VEHICLE.

Around 70% of our final year students, have secured good scores in various competitive examinations like GATE, GRE, GMAT, CAT, TOEFL, IELTS etc.

Conclusion

For every good beginning there will be a good ending. The brief report might have given a glimpse of the progress of the college in various fronts, in a nutshell for all these things to happen, there were many many people behind. We heartily thank the Management, Staff, and Students, for their extreme support in making this academic year the most happening year of all times. For the coming academic year, we aim to continue this legacy and improve upon the aspects where we are lagging behind.

At this point we do sincerely believe that whatever we have achieved is a drop in an ocean and as Robert Frost has said "there are promises to keep and miles before we sleep and miles before we sleep"
